What is required for a person to be saved?

1.) Must believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.  He died for the sins of the world.  And must believe in His resurrection from the dead.  Through His death He took away our sins.  Through His resurrection He made us righteous by sharing with us His righteousness.  Salvation is not by works; it is by faith only.  Jesus is now alive and sits at the right-hand side of the Father, while at the same time He is omnipresent (everywhere at the same time).  He both paid our sin debt and credited believers with His righteousness.

2.) We must know who Jesus is.  He came down from Heaven to be born from the virgin Mary.  He is the second person of the Trinity.  There is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  He is divine, which means that along with the person of the Father and Holy Spirit, Jesus is God.  He is sinless, completely holy, all-powerful, the Creator of the World and will one day return to reign for ever and ever.  He will return for those who believed in His payment for sin He provided on the cross.  We must also know that there is nothing else other than what was mentioned required to be saved. To add to these requirements is to cancel grace.

This is as succinctly as I can put it.  Many are able to recite most of number 1, but omit what His righteousness does for us.  They know that Jesus took away our sins, but they don't understand that He also imputed to us His righteousness.  While knowledge of this tidbit is not necessary for salvation, we should know what the resurrection did for us so that we can understand our new identities in Christ.  The most important part of number 1 is that Jesus' death on the cross took away our sins and that He resurrected from the grave.

As far as number 2: it is not enough to just know about the cross--we need to also be referring to the correct Jesus.  There are many made-up Jesuses.  Some have a Jesus who is not God, and therefore conclude that there is no Trinity.  It seems absurd, but some think Jesus sinned.  This would not be the correct Jesus.  Some do not understand that Jesus is God, the Creator of the World.  He was both God and man: fully God and fully man.  And the last point to number 2 is that many try to add to the list of requirements and cancel out the grace of salvation.  They make up their own rules that God never stipulated.  God gave us the blueprint for salvation.  To add to that distorts and cancels the blueprint.  There are no works required.  Just faith in Jesus Christ.
